Oral hygiene

O.K. And now the good news

All of these potential problems can be prevented. By maintaining your oral hygiene on a daily basis you can eliminate the problem. You can directly influence your oral health by being dedicated to it.

The most important points for a good oral hygiene:

  1. Wash your teeth minimally twice a day using a toothpaste which contains fluoride.

  2. Floss your teeth every day (preferably in the evening). The bacteria and dental plaque which cause caries can remain in the area between the teeth even after you have cleaned them with a toothbrush. They can be eliminated only with the dental floss or with interdental brushes.

  3. Try to have a balanced diet with a lot of fibres and, of course, avoid cookies, chocolate etc. between the meals.

  4. Visit us regularly. Every 6 months you should go through a professional teeth cleaning program.

Some of the answers on the questions frequently asked by our patients.

Which toothpaste should I use?

Honestly, it is not that important. Regular cleaning is much more important. Use a toothpaste which suits you best as long as it contains fluoride. For some toothpastes it is said that they can whiten your teeth, those ones are not a happy solution. They contain abrasive microbeads which do remove sediments and pigmentations, but they also damage the tooth enamel. Carbamide peroxide which is used for teeth whitening is not that chemically stable for it to be able to be incorporated in a toothpaste in a concentration which would give the desired effect. The toothpastes for "smokers” or those for "tooth polishing” can also be too abrasive and you should avoid them (source: www.dentaltwins.com) We use Sensodyne, Parodontax, Elmex and Enzycal (Curaprox) toothpastes.

Which toothbrush should I use?

IMPORTANT! We recommend the use of soft toothbrushes. The hard ones can be too abrasive and they can damage gums. Replace your toothbrush every three to four months or sooner if the bristles are frayed. The old toothbrush won't do a good job. We use CURAPROX toothbrushes (SOFT or ULTRASOFT) – we especially recommend them if you notice bleeding when you brush your teeth.

Professional teeth cleaning consists of a few procedures

  1. removing layers of plaque with an ultrasound machine (CAVITRON)

  2. removing inaccessible layers as well as pigmentations (colouring) (i.e. pigmentation caused by smoking) on the tooth by sandblasting the tooth with sodium hydrogen carbonate (AIR FLOW)

  3. polishing teeth with interdental strips and polishing cups and with the use of polishing paste

  4. after polishing by applying the GC TOOTHMOOSE paste which neutralizes the acid produced by the bacteria in the dental plaque, protects bare dental surfaces and enhances the natural process of remineralization of the tooth enamel (more on www.mi.gceurope.com)

The whole process lasts about an hour and the results can be pleasingly surprising. With an incomparably better feeling of cleanliness of oral cavity the teeth also regain their natural colour. Very often patients come in the ordination interested primarily in whitening their teeth, but after a thorough cleaning they are more than pleased with their natural teeth colour (especially the smokers and the persons who drink a lot of coffee or haven't done a professional teeth cleaning).

We will also show you with pleasure the best technique of brushing teeth as well as recommend other products (dental floss, interdental brushes, mouthwash) which are the most suitable for you.
